LUKA is a simple-to-use plugin for Unreal Engine that allows anyone from film students to high-end gaffers and DPs to accurately test lighting and camera setups in a real-time virtual environment. It offers an intuitive, scalable interface that is designed to be inclusive of users with little or no previous experience of Unreal Engine.

Providing an extensive, ever-growing catalog of ARRI luminaires, lighting accessories, cameras, recording formats, and lenses—as well as options for inputting custom and third-party hardware—LUKA is a powerful platform for finding real-world solutions with minimal expenditure and effort.

ARRI LUKA Guided Toour

ARRI Virtual Fixtures are built using the detailed specifications of real lighting fixtures, delivering accurate color, intensity, and light distribution. You’ll have the same look, reach, and tuneability as the actual fixtures, as well as seamless integration into lighting networks and control panels via ArtNet and sACN. Common accessories can be attached to the fixtures or positioned around them, including diffusion, bounce, and flags. Shadows display realistic characteristics whether hard-edged from an open-faced lamp, softened by accessories, or cast from multiple sources.

ARRI Virtual Cam emulates various different ARRI camera models and their settings, evolving Unreal Engine’s Camera Actor into a fully realistic production camera and incorporating key lens properties such as focal length, focus setting, and T-stop. The accurate color rendition and exposure levels achieved by ARRI’s virtual cameras and lights are especially helpful for building a dependable previsualization that is profoundly useful not just logistically, but creatively as well.

Real-time rendering is at the core of LUKA’s responsive, Lumen-based workflow. You will instantly and smoothly see the effects on light, shadow, and reflections as you dynamically move lights and cameras around on your virtual set. You can build your 3D space from scratch, or choose and adapt the countless environments available in Unreal Engine. You can even scan the faces of performers with consumer hardware to practice sculpting light on realistic virtual avatars.

Preproduction: Save time and money with digital recceing and accurate previsualizations of your shoots. Reliably determine the precise type and quantity of lighting fixtures you will need for your desired look in specific scenes. Get a visual feeling for your set and scenery, and rehearse complex sequences in advance. 

In-camera visual effects (LED wall production): Twin your virtual camera with a physical ARRI camera via LiveLink, syncing camera and lens settings in real time for live output, and use the ARRI Color Management calibration tool to achieve more convincing results with LED walls.

Seamless data transfer to post: For any kind of shoot with virtual elements, use LUKA to provide easy control of accurate lighting fixtures and streamline your data handover to postproduction.

Postproduction: Post processes such as the incorporation of CG elements can be accelerated and costs reduced, with LUKA providing fast and easy control of virtual lighting fixtures.
